We are launching a very special feature, the Volunteer of the Month. It will be a monthly highlight of the thousands of behind the scenes volunteers that make the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon such a success.
10/2/13 - Chuck & Diane Little
We would like to recognize Dr. Charles and Dianne Little as our volunteers of the month. Dr. and Mrs. Little have volunteered in a variety of roles since 2009 including the set-up of elite athlete aid stations, elite athlete pre-race coordination, the set-up of entertainment along the course, and helped answer any questions our participants may have while serving as "Ask Me" volunteers.
Dr. Little is an avid runner who is participating in his 9th Columbus Marathon and his 11th overall this fall. Dianne enjoys participating in local 5ks and half marathons. Dr. and Mrs. Little also have a passion for education as Dr. Little has worked as a teacher, principal and Superintendent of Schools since 1969. He currently is a clinical professor at Indiana University/Purdue University, Indianapolis in the IU School of Education.
9/2/13 - Coach Rick Ford
This month we would like to recognize the efforts of Coach Rick Ford. He and his Cardinal Ritter cross country team have staffed water station R on the marathon course since 2010. Since taking over the water station on 30th St. they have provided a party like atmosphere that very few rival as they have won the water station spirit competition the last two years.
Between Rick's passion for distance running and teaching his team the importance of volunteering, the Monumental water station experience has turned into a tradition for the Cardinal Ritter cross country team. They have become so committed to the IMM and our cause that in 2013 the athletes volunteering on Nov 2 could potentially miss some teammates competing at the state cross country meet on the same day.
8/2/13 - Teresa Altemeyer
Our inaugural volunteer of the month is Teresa Altemeyer. She and her husband Don have hosted a band in the front yard of their home on Washington Blvd since the Monumental started in 2008. In addition to supporting the Monumental in this capacity, they share our passion for supporting public education in Indianapolis. Both have been long time supporters of Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) including having a daughter who taught and is currently a principal within IPS. Teresa, a wonderful artist, has hosted all types of bands from punk rock to a group of teenage flutists. Teresa invites neighbors over to cheer Monumental runners and walkers as they go past their beautiful home on mile eleven of the marathon. Their informal neighborhood cheer station has grown to a race day celebration of over 100 supporters. Her enthusiasm for the Monumental and our mission of supporting IPS is unsurpassed. Thank you Teresa!
If you would like to host a band on the Monumental route or interested in hosting a viewing party on the course, please contact our Co-Entertainment Coordinator, Emily Horn, at email@example.com.
