Area Kids a Little Warmer with Donation of Hats

Recipients are several Indianapolis youth-serving organizations

December 23, 2013 - The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon (IMM) recently donated over a thousand winter hats to local charities. In 2013 all runners and walkers who crossed the Monumental finish line were given a distinctive winter hat, along with a finisher's medal, to commemorate their achievement. Now these hats will help keep Indianapolis kids warm this winter.

The 2013 Monumental Marathon experienced unprecedented success, due in part to support from Franciscan St. Francis Health and Apex Benefits. The November 2013 event was comprised of three races, a full marathon, half marathon, and 5k, with nearly 14,000 registrants combined. Approximately 11,500 finishers left for a surplus of the hats, and giving back to the community that has embraced this event was a natural fit.

Since its inception in 2008, the IMM has donated over $400,000 to local non-profits in support of public education. Now, the following youth-serving organizations have received winter hats: School on Wheels, Hawthorne Community Center, and Concord Neighborhood Center. Organizations that provide direct services to families and veterans in need received hats as well, including: Dove Recovery House, Wheeler Mission, the Julian Center, Horizon House and HVAF (Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation.)

These winter hats are almost as coveted as a medal to the participants that cross the finish line. Thousands of runners and walkers in the central Indiana running community who did finish the Monumental may just see a lot more hats on people around town. Monumental participants should know they are a part of an organization that is making a real impact on the community.

"As a non-profit organization with an explicit mission to combat childhood obesity, the Monumental wants to partner with and support the children in Indianapolis. These hats help not only keep these kids warm, they promote our message of lifelong fitness. That's a benefit to everyone," says Blake Boldon, Executive Director of the IMM.

Hundreds of additional hats were shared with Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services through Franciscan St. Francis Health to help keep emergency personnel warm while serving the community. The IMM has given back in other ways as well. Earlier in 2013 2,000 finisher medals from the 2011 races were donated to the Indiana Sports Corporation's Geared for Health program, and the IMM recently presented checks totaling $122,000 to the IPS Educational Foundation, Simon Youth Foundation and College Summit at the Indiana Pacers home opener in October.
